Nicholas J. Vogelzang, M.D. Nicholas Vogelzang was appointed director of Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) in January of 2004. In January 2008, he was appointed executive vice president for Academic Affairs. Dr. Vogelzang served as Institute director from 2004 to 2009, when he assumed the title of head of the Genitourinary Cancer Program. This role allows Dr. Vogelzang to focus exclusively on advancing the research and treatment options for genitourinary cancer patients at NVCI. Dr. Vogelzang continues to play a leadership role in the Institute and serve on the executive committee. Prior to joining NVCI, Dr. Vogelzang served as the director of the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center.

Dr. Vogelzang has served on numerous committees of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, as well as on its board of directors from 1993 to 1996. He is a former president of the Illinois Division of the American Cancer Society. Dr. Vogelzang was the principal investigator at the University of Chicago for Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) from 1988 to 1999, chair of the CALGB Prostate Committee from 1993 to 1999 and principal investigator of the University of Chicago Cancer Center Support Grant. He is a member of many societies, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Urological Association, the Kidney Cancer Association, the Society of Urologic Oncology and the European Society for Medical Oncology. In August 2006, he was elected chair of the board of directors of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF).

Dr. Vogelzang has served on the Editorial Boards of Cancer, Cancer Research, Clinical Genitourinary Cancer, The Prostate Journal, Seminars in Oncology and the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and is a reviewer for numerous other journals. He is the author of nearly 435 scientific publications (including peer-reviewed papers, internet publications, reviews, book chapters and books and journal issues), over 381 abstracts and letters, and has given over 350 scientific lectures. As a survivor of Hodgkin's disease, he is a sought-after public speaker. He is the lead editor of the Comprehensive Textbook of Genitourinary Oncology, third edition, which was published in 2005. Dr. Vogelzang is a recognized expert in new therapies for patients with metastatic kidney cancer, including genetic therapy.

Dr. Vogelzang received his M.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1974. He completed his internship, residency and chief residency in internal medicine at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, followed by his fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He served as a faculty member at the University of Chicago from 1982 - 2003 and is currently a professor of medicine at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Dr. Vogelzang's major medical interests are in clinical trials in genitourinary malignancies and mesothelioma. He is a recognized expert in new therapies for patients with metastatic kidney cancer, including genetic therapy, new cytokine therapy and combination cytokine therapy. He also conducts large-scale national trials in the field of prostate cancer and mesothelioma. In 2005, he edited Malignant Mesothelioma, the leading research clinical textbook on the subject.

Dr. Vogelzang sees and evaluates patients with prostate, kidney, bladder and testis cancer for second opinions, standard of care treatment and for entry onto clinical trials. He does the same for patients with malignant mesothelioma and assists the other NVCI faculty in caring for patients with other malignant disorders.
