Las Vegas, April 7, 2009 – Nevada Cancer Institute announced today that Afinitor® (everolimus) tablets, a new cancer medicine (created by Novartis) studied in clinical trials led by Nicholas J. Vogelzang, M.D., professor and chief of genitourinary oncology, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma after failure of treatment with Sutent® (sunitinib)* or Nexavar® (sorafenib)**. Afinitor is the first approved once-daily oral therapy that continuously targets mTOR, a protein inside the cancer cell that controls tumor cell division and blood vessel growth.
